@seawalls_ Emeryville participating artists got to experience the San Francisco Bay both from the water and the land.⁠

Renowned Bay Area author and ocean conservationist, David Helvarg from @bluefrontiercampaign joined us on our evening outing on the Pacific Pearl, sharing his decades of insight around regional marine issues.⁠
⁠
Then, the next day, our group took a walking tour of Emeryville with Robin Freeman, following the path of the Temescal Creek that flows beneath the streets of the town, ending at its mouth where there are critical estuarine habitats.⁠

After disease took out a large population of the kelp forest's natural defenders, the sunflower sea star, thousands of purple urchins have taken over. Fortunately, the small but mighty sea otters are fighting on the front lines of this issue! Protecting and providing healthy habits for all ocean critters has an immense effect throughout the ocean ecosystem.” - Alexandra Underwood & Joey Rose

🔥Last week was a busy one with wall and paint preparations for @pangeaseed Foundation’s @seawalls_ Santa Cruz presented by @madefreshcrew. We’ll be activating 19 mural sites across the city where the mountains meet the surf in collaboration with renowned local and visiting artists!

Produced in collaboration with @madefreshcrew, we’ll be engaging and inspiring the local community by bringing the oceans into the streets and highlighting critical marine environmental issues through large-scale public artwork and community outreach.

Done!! I had so SO much fun with @azucarsf , @paintthevoidproject , and all of SOMA! After talking to Jon at @azucarsf , I decided to highlight agave. Because traditional farming practices can't keep up with the demand for tequila production, a lot of the diverse, locally adapted agave species have been replaced by big blue agave plantations. This makes the plants and ecosystem a lot more susceptible to disease - very veryyyy similar to how we got to the COVID-19 pandemic. A healthy ecosystem directly affects public health, and our communities are stronger because of beauty diversity brings. I wanted to highlight multiple species of agave, just as we should highlight, celebrate, and preserve diversity in our own communities and environment. And then it turns out that Jon has done a lot of work in the agave reforestation space!! They even bring these topics into their tequila tastings 🙌🏼 you guys better head over to Azucar Lounge for some amazing food, amazing margaritas, and AMAZING people💕🙌🏼🔥✨
